Real question: what do you parents make of this 3 y/o reaction?

Yesterday we were at the soccer fields to watch his cousin play. He got a ball from the coach and was kicking it back and forth with me and his grandpa. When we stopped playing with him, he continued to kick the ball and accidentally kicked it on the field. Myself and my sister said "Jax- go get the ball- hurry!!!" He got the ball and then stood by me and said "I can't like the soccer ball and I don't want to play with it" He had his arms crossed and had a scowl on his face. I eventually got him to play with the ball again but what is up with his reaction? Why was he so upset that we told him to grab the ball (with a bit of urgency). Is this a normal reaction?
